Beef Shares

What is a beef share?

A Beef Share is a traditional way beef farmers sell directly to neighbors.

Buying meat shares also supports a sustainable, healthy, local meat source and protects against food shortages caused by supply chain breakdowns as seen with the pandemic. It involves the advanced purchase, slaughter and butchery of an animal, to share amongst a group of people.

Our meat share is a whole, half, or quarter of an animal that is butchered and the individual cuts are packaged.  These cuts include steaks, ribs, roasts, and ground products.  Unlike other farms, we know many people who buy our products are also health minded so we also include the internal nutrient dense organ meat but in a ground form combined with some of the regular ground beef, we call this our paleo blend and package it separately from the other ground beef in your share.

The share process is seasonal as the animals selected are raised from calf size for at least 1 year and sometimes 2 years until they reach a certain size.

The share is purchased in advance so the farmer knows how many cattle to raise and set aside for the share process.

The processing of the cattle set aside for the share plans is usually done near the end of a year in the November or December time frame but this could be sooner if the animal reaches a certain size early.

We schedule the processing of our animals at a certain size so that it will give us a constant amount of beef to accurately fulfill the beef share commitment.

What is the weight of beef I can expect to receive?

The cattle shares are sold in 3 different sizes based on customer take home weight. This weight is displayed below the picture of each item on the Store Page.

  • One whole animal customer take home weight is 400 pounds.
  • One half (1/2) animal customer take home weight is 200 pounds.
  • One Quarter (1/4) animal customer take home weight is 100 pounds.

What are the common weights used in cattle processing?

Live Weight, Hanging Weight, and Take Home (Freezer) Weight

These weights are:

  • Live weight is the weight of the live animal before processing.
  • Hanging weight is the weight of the animal after the hide and all organs have been removed.
  • Take Home (Freezer) weight is the weight of the usable parts of the animal that have been aged, cut, and packaged.

Why do we use the Take Home (Freezer) weight for quoting prices?

Other sites use various weights and calculations to quote approximate prices the customer will pay. They usually require a deposit and then  a final payment after the animal has been processed and is ready for delivery. This means the customer does not know up front what the total amount is that they will be paying.  Also they do not know the exact weight of the beef  that they will be receiving.

We decided to simplify and clarify the entire process by giving all the information up front so the customer knows the exact amount of beef they would receive and the exact amount they would pay.

Also we added the ability for the customer to pay in installments or a known lump sum before delivery instead of only a final unknown lump sum before delivery.  We make the payment process simpler, clearer, and easier.

What is the cut breakdown I can expect?

You can expect your order to contain approximately 1/3 steak, 1/3 roast, and 1/3 ground beef.  There will be a generous portion of each of the available cuts and they will be individually wrapped.

Almonds

What type of almond do we sell?

We sell Nonpareil almonds which are known as the creme de la creme of almonds.

The name Nonpareil translates to “without equal.”

Nonpareil almonds are plump, light and smooth with a naturally sweet flavor. We only sell unpasteurized raw almonds that are never heated, gassed, or steamed. The difference between pasteurized and unpasteurized almonds is the change in flavor, and texture.

How should your almonds be stored?

Your almonds should be stored in a cool & dry place, away from heat, moisture, or direct sunlight. Refrigerate the almonds to retain nutrient levels for longer term storage after opening.

What are the California rules for selling unpasteurized raw almonds?

California law stipulates that unpasteurized raw almonds can only be sold directly from the farmer who grows them to the customer who consumes them. There is a sales limit of 100 pound per day. Therefore we do not sell our almonds in larger wholesale or container quantities.

All California grown raw almonds available in stores by law are pasteurized with either steam or gassed with propylene oxide. The only legal way to purchase truly unpasteurized, raw California almonds is directly from the farmer.

How are our almonds shipped?

Almonds are shipped via USPS Priority Mail using flat rate boxes and zip lock bags. Once your order ships, it usually only takes 2-5 days to arrive. You will receive an email when your order ships. Almonds cannot be shipped outside of the 50 US states at this time. If you require shipping by any other means use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of the page to make your request and it will be evaluated and you will be contacted.
